Treatments for Eczema

A lot of people get affected by skin infections every day. The physical symptoms of the so called skin disease are not be very painful. But the emotional trauma associated with discolored skin, blisters and rashes is imense. The embarrassment of being seen in public in such a condition makes most people avoid the company of friends and well wishers alike. However, we need to look forwards and try to find an effective treatment instead of hiding from the society.

Eczema is one such common skin ailment. The American Academy of Dermatology has revealed that at least 10% to 20% of the American population are affected by this chronic and recurring inflammatory condition of the skin. While there are many effective treatments for eczema, severe infections are particularly difficult to get rid of entirely.

Treatment- Treating the symptoms of  itching and inflammation are usually tried initially. Most doctors as well as dermatologists try to prevent the rapid worsening of the condition of the skin too.The process of healing may be prolonged and it is best not to lose patience and stop the treatment altogether. Changing your lifestyle may become  necessary if you want to eliminate this embarrassing infection from your life entirely.

Keeping the skin hydrated is important if you want to reduce the irritation. However, water is not beneficial in such infections and you need to apply oily ointments or skin creams which have very little water content. Staying for long hours in the water or over bathing may aggravate the condition even more.

Dermatologist often prescribe corticosteroids in order to combat the inflammation. The potency of the drugs depend completely on the severity of the symptoms. Antihistamines can also be prescribed if the itching becomes uncontrollable. A few of these antihistamines may also contain mild sedatives in order to soothe the patient.

The drugs Tacrolimus and Pimecrolimus have now been approved by the FDA for treating severe cases of Eczema. Both these drugs are known for their immuno suppressant properties. However, these drugs are not beneficial for prolonged treatment and can only be administered when all other methods of treatment fail. The usage of these drugs should also be restricted to a short period of time only.
