The pain of sciatica can be excruciating indeed. The condition arises out of the inflammation or obstruction of the sciatic nerve which is in fact the longest nerve running through our body. The nerve supplies the entire lower back along with the buttocks and runs along the thighs to terminate at the soles of our foot. The problem of sciatica is fairly common and can be reduced in a number of ways.
However, most analgesics come with extensive side effects and can give rise to additional health problems later on. Herbal remedies on the other hand are relatively safer to use as they do not cause any appreciable degree of harm if taken according to the instructions. Here are some of the common herbs that can lessen the sciatic nerve pain to a great extent.
The Devil’s Claw as the herb of Harpagophytum procumbens is botanically known is renowned for its pain relieving qualities. The herb can minimize the sciatic pain as effectively as it gets rid of the arthritic discomfort.
Application of the Wintergreen oil is another useful remedy that has been associated with bringing down the swelling caused by abnormality in the nerves or muscle tendons. The methyl salicylate present in the oil is particularly helpful in curing the pain associated with sciatica and rheumatism.
Chamomile tea is well known for its healing powers. However, the application of the tea on the affected area will help to relax the tense muscles adequately.
Turmeric is one of the wonder herbs used for pain management throughout the ages. It is particularly popular in the orient and is known for relieving intense pain of muscular origin or that arising from external injury. It is either mixed with milk or with garlic and leek for effective results.
Heating a few pods of garlic in mustard oil works wonders for eliminating the pain of sciatica. Regular massage of garlic in mustard oil over the affected area will help to reduce the pain dramatically.
St. John’s Wort is another herb that releases the thereby relieving the sciatic nerve pain to a great extent. Rubbing of St. John Wort oil over the painful area just before retiring for the night will give the best results.
