Treating a Flea or Tick Bite

Dogs laden with fleas are quite common, especially if the dog in question is a mongrel or does not have a owner. Apart from dogs, other domesticated animals like cats as well as farm animals get affected by fleas and ticks. Human beings are not immune either. Flea and tick bites often result in intense itchiness, allergies and hives. However, you can certainly take the necessary steps for limiting the bite effects as well as to soothe the skin.

Locating the exact area of the bite is necessary at first. The skin appears to be a little elevated if you are bitten by a flea. A red mark bang in the middle of the affected area  will itch uncontrollably as well. Such bites are commonly seen under tight clothing items like the socks or pants. You may remain unaware of a tick bite as they are usually painless. There may be associated burning and itching sensation in rare cases especially when the tick transfers a parasite on to your skin.

Removing the tick with the aid of a pair of tweezers is advisable in normal circumstances. You must, however, take care to pluck the entire tick from your skin. You require the attention of a doctor in case you find a part of the tick remaining inside your skin. Using a specialized tick remover may be more beneficial as it has a minute nozzle like extension which helps to pick up the tick gently from under your skin. Cleaning the affected area thoroughly with an antiseptic soap and water is highly recommended.

Application of a soothing lotion specifically Calamine or Cortisone will help to control the itching appreciably. Applying an ice pack on the bitten areas will help to bring down the swelling as well as the associated red marks. Oral medicines may also be taken to control the intense itching if the topically applied lotions are unable to cure it completely.

Keeping your house and surroundings clean will help to eliminate fleas entirely. Animals with fleas need to be treated until they become completely clean. Ticks are normally picked up from the wilderness or grassy glades. Removing the entire set of clothes and washing them separately is recommended in order to keep away the ticks that adhere to your clothing.
