Tips to Recover After a Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty or ‘Tummy tuck’ has become extremely popular nowadays. The surgery involves removal of excess fat and loose skin from the abdomen. This procedure helps to firm up your tummy and consequently you look younger and physically fit.

However, like any surgical procedure, the ‘tummy tuck’ also needs a certain recovery period. Most patients are horrified to know that the effects of a ‘Tummy Tuck’ will not be obvious for several months at least. The exact time for recovery varies from patient to patient. It depends largely on the general health of the person undergoing the surgery. You also need to follow certain guidelines in order to benefit fully after the expensive, beauty enhancing surgery.

Exercise- Complete bed rest for a long period after the ‘tummy tuck’ is not recommended. You need to exercise your body or else you are in for trouble. There may be fat deposits on your abdomen  negating the effects of the surgery. Simple non-aerobic exercises like walking can effectively reduce the swelling and boost up your immunity. However, you need to consult your surgeon before embarking on the exercise. Starting too soon after the surgery may not be advisable. You need to be careful about straining, lifting or bending very soon too. It is a good idea to keep your knees in a propped up position while you sleep.

Medication- Almost all ‘tummy tuck’ patients are given drugs to control the pain after the surgical procedure. Wearing a compression garment over your tummy also helps to keep down the swelling. Antibiotics are needed to eliminate the risk of infection and steroidal compounds may be recommended by your doctor for controlling the inflammation around the affected area.

Other Activities- Bathing or taking a shower is not advisable immediately after the surgery. Sponging of the body can be an excellent alternative while you are recovering from the effects of a ‘Tummy Tuck’. You can begin your normal schedule, once the swelling and the pain subsides. It is a good idea to  consult your surgeon before you go back to work.
