Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease which involves the “narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart”. Another most common type of heart disease is cardiovascular disease which is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States. Both the heart’s functioning and the structure of the heart are affected by this form of heart disease.
Hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis is otherwise called by the name coronary artery disease (or abbreviated to CAD). The arteries are mainly responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients to the heart. This is one of the common types of heart disease.
Irregular or abnormal heart beat, otherwise known as arrhythmia can also lead to heart disease. In this case, changes takes place to the rhythm of the heart which can in turn lead to very fast or slow heart beats. This is one of the rarest types of heart disease.
Another factor that can lead to heart attack or stroke is heart valve disease. This can take place when there is a blockage in any one of the heart valves. Aortic stenosis, mitral valve prolapse abd mitral valve insufficiency are examples of heart valve disease.
When there is a defect in the structure of the heart or its blood vessels, it can affect the unborn baby. This type of heart disease does not manifest until the child becomes an adult This type of problem is known to impact at least 8 out of 1000 babies born in the U.S. Disease that affects the muscles of the heart is known by the name Cardiomyopathies. In this case the heart muscles will become enlarged or else they become stiffened.
