Symptoms And Risks Associated With Breast Cancer
Carcinoma or cancer still remains a dreaded disease. Women are particularly concerned about breast cancer. Almost all women try feeling for lumps or have a mammography done at least once in their lifetime. Let us see what causes breast cancer:-
Causes- Breast cancer occurs when there is an abnormal proliferation of cells in one or both the breasts. They attack the tissues nearby and form a hard lump which can be easily felt externally. Sometimes these cells spread to the lymph nodes and other distant areas of the body.
Risks- The exact reason for having breast cancer has not been uncovered as yet. But there are some known risk factors for the condition.
It has been seen that older women normally suffer from breast cancer. The likelihood of this type of cancer increases with age. Most affected women also have a family history of breast cancer. Studies have also shown that women who have gone in for hormone replacement therapy after menopause are more prone to breast cancer. Inheritance of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may also be linked to breast cancer in women.
An unhealthy lifestyle aggravates the risk greatly. Being overweight and leading a sedentary life are also risk factors as is the intake of excessive alcohol.
Symptoms- The early signs may be in form of a painless lump in the breast or underarms. It is time to take notice if your breast shows a change in shape and size. The skin may also have a peeled look or your breast may look dimpled. An inverted nipple or abnormal discharge from it may be a cause for concern. If you notice any of these symptoms visit your physician immediately.
Recovery- If detected early enough most women can recover completely from breast cancer. Chemotherapy and related treatment are often enough. Removal of the breast is not necessary unless the cancerous cells spread throughout the area.
