Symptoms and remedy of ear wax

Our ears are looked after by nature very well. Small glands are present in the ear canal that is responsible for producing wax. The main function of this wax is to trap foreign bodies and dust so that there is a clean passage for the sound waves. Normal wax in the ears can be maintained by cleaning it during bath.

Sometimes there may be excessive secretion of wax and in this case the wax can create a ringing sensation or pain in the ear by blocking the opening of the external ear canal. In such a case a person may also face difficulty in hearing. Ear wax can also lead to cough, pain and hearing loss.. Other symptoms associated with ear wax include ear ache, tinnitus, partial hearing loss and fullness of ears.

You can pour warm olive oil or other edible oils into the ear for removing ear wax. This process can be repeated for at least 2-3 nights. This will help to soften the wax and its easy removal with the help of a ear bud. You can also make use of a vinegar-water-peroxide solution (1:1:2) which can be poured into ears after heating it till body temperature.

This will help in softening the wax. You can also make use of a drop of baby oil which can be regularly placed in each ear canal for softening hard or painful wax.

You can see a doctor if the home remedies are unsuccessful and if you suspect a perforated ear drum because of loud noise, ear infection or injury. Even if you experience symptoms such as drainage from ears and severe pain or vomiting you must see a doctor.

It is better to go to the hospital in case you suffer from loss of balance, spinning sensation or inability to walk. Sudden loss of hearing and high fever and vomiting and fever are other reasons for you to visit your doctor without delay.

Using an otoscope a doctor can be able to understand your symptoms and suggest remedies for ear wax blockage. Using a curette or a small plastic spoon the doctor may remove the earwax. He can also irrigate the ear with warmed saline or water, sodium bicarbonate, docusate or other prescription-strength eardrops.
