Swimming for Fitness

For all those people who are suffering from back problems, arthritis, weight problems or lung conditions such as asthma, swimming is the best form of exercise. It is also a safe form of exercise for pregnant women. In the Western countries many pregnant women take to the pool to relax while it is quite rare in countries such as India.

Swimming is a risky activity unless you master the act of swimming. Hence you must make sure that there are lifeguards in attendance whenever you are near the pool. For all water based recreational sports, swimming is the best safety precaution. You can start with swimming by getting the help of trainers and swim using life jackets which can give you more confidence on the water to swim on your own.

In swimming mostly the upper-body is exercised. The small muscles of the arms are used more than the big leg muscles in swimming. Your level of participation in events such as lap swimming, masters swimming or any level in between will mainly depend on your level of competence and confidence. Swimming can be taken up by anyone who has the will and desire to do so.

In the case of synchronized swimming, it is more like a dance or ballet performance done by a group of swimmers in a pool. The movements of the swimmers are in sync with each other.

Any exercise that makes your heart rate increase for 20 minutes or more can help you lose weight easily. In this respect, swimming can aid weight loss faster than any other form of exercise. You must however combine swimming with an ideal or sensible eating plan so that you can see the benefits faster. For all those who are eager to improve their fitness levels, swimming is a great sport to start with because in this exercise your body weight gets automatically supported as you exercise.
