Steps for Treating a Dog Bite Successfully
The dog is the most common pet to be found in American homes. You will rarely come across a family who do not count their beloved pet dog as a part of their families. However, it does not hurt to be careful. Dogs can be unpredictable and young children can often tease a dog provoking him into biting. A dog bite can be a very painful experience as well.
However, there are a lot of medicines available now allowing you to reverse the ill effects of a dog bite in almost no time at all. Let us now see the steps that need to be taken once you or your loved ones experience a dog bite…
The first and foremost step to be taken is to examine the wounded area in order to assess the degree of damage. Shock is also a possibility in such circumstances and you need to see whether the victim can be moved immediately from the area or not. Take care to consult a doctor at once in case you find the skin broken by the teeth of the dog. This is of paramount importance as you need to rule out rabies or other infections that can occur after getting bitten by a dog.
Washing the area with a weak soap and water solution is recommended by most doctors at this stage. It is also a good idea to repeat the procedure of washing for at least 4 to 5 times in order to eliminate the all traces of the dog’s saliva from the affected area.
Applying a topical anti septic ointment on the wound will also help to get rid of infection effectively. A bleeding wound needs to be covered with a clean strip of bandage as well. You can also apply pressure on the area and lift up the wounded area well above the level of the heart if you find the bleeding wound to be severe.
Reporting the dog to the authorities is a necessary measure. Checking out the documentation of the dog in order to ensure the period of the last rabies shot is essential as well. An unknown or stray dog should be held captive until after the possibility of contracting rabies can be safely ruled out.
