Sleep and your immune system
Sleep plays an active role in the functioning of our immune system. The immune system is responsible for removing viruses, harmful bacteria and other disease causing microbes and germs which may cause flu, colds, coughs etc. The T cells in the immune system help to kill viruses and germs. There is a direct relationship between sleep levels and the immune system. The important fact to note is that less sleep can lead to a weakened immune system and can make a person feeling more ill and listless. If one has trouble going to sleep, his immune system would be weakened further causing the attack of various diseases.
For a long time, experts and scientists are of the opinion that healthy sleep leads to a good immune system. They have found that people who sleep well have more t-cells which boost the immune system of the body. For persons who were sleep deprived, there was an acute drop in t-cell numbers. T-cells help us to stay away from sickness as they attack disease creating bacteria, germs and viruses. They also help the body by eliminating damaged cells which are not functioning properly. You must get at least 6-7 hours of sleep to maintain your immune system at an optimal level. You can follow the following tips to ensure that you get a good night’s rest.
