Sepsis- Causes and Cures

Toxin producing bacteria cause an infection of the bloodstream which is called by the name sepsis. Infection is caused by microorganisms that invade the body. Sepsis is otherwise known as Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). This condition can be fatal as it is a serious condition.

What Causes Sepsis?
Sepsis is caused by a bacterial infection which can start at any part of the human body. The most common areas where infection can begin are the liver, kidneys, gall bladder, skin, bowel and the lungs. Bacterial infection can also originate from bed sores, surgical wounds, intravenous lines, skin ulcers etc. This condition can also be triggered by trauma, surgery, pneumonia, burns, or by conditions such as AIDS or cancer.

Diagnosis and symptoms
Through a blood test, sepsis can be confirmed. Symptoms of this condition includes a drop in blood pressure, rapid heart beat, hyperventilation, shaking, chills, fever or hypothermia, decreased urine output, delirium etc.

Complications of Sepsis
When complications arise, the lungs, kidneys, liver, central nervous system etc may stop functioning normally. You may also notice a decreased blood flow to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and central nervous system. Some patients who have sepsis develop a rash on their skin which may be in the form of dark spots or a reddish discoloration. Pain in the joints can be developed in some people especially in the elbows, wrists, hips, back, knees, and ankles.

Treatment Options for Sepsis
Depending on the place of origin of the infection, treatment can be given. The source of infection must be found for doing this properly. Sepsis can occur in anyone. Some people are found to have a greater risk of developing this disease than others. Those who are prone to this condition include people having a compromised immune system, people having injuries or wounds, such as those from accidents, bullets etc or those having intravenous catheters, urinary catheters and wound drainage.
