Sandwiches can be Healthy Too

Sandwiches are staple food for most people. They are good to eat and convenient to carry around. However, most Americans put in enormous amount of filling within the slices of bread. Toppings and garnishings are often unhealthy as well. A lot of people seem to live on sandwiches alone. It is therefore; wise to settle for a healthy option instead of ruining your health.

Bread- Lets have a look at the bread first. Go for the whole grain version instead of the white processed bread. The fiber present within the grains is good for your heart and will also improve your bowel movement considerably. Most of these breads are rich in minerals and vitamins apart from being extremely filling. You will not feel hungry for a long time if you get into the habit of eating whole grain breads.  Breads containing omega 3, flax seed or even raisins are readily available in the market. You can also choose bagels or fajita wraps in place of the more conventional baked product.

Dressings- Even if you remember to keep your bread healthy, you may simply go overboard when it comes to the accompanying sauces. Mayonnaise, cheese or high fat containing butter should be shunned absolutely.  However, you can try using the lighter variety of butter and mayonnaise if you are too attached to their taste. Peanut butter can provide you with a good alternative. Try out various pickles, salsa and light cream cheeses in order to tickle your taste buds. Mustard can be a perfect low calorie dressing for your sandwich too. The Indian delicacy- chutney has been adopted by the British and is a much loved as a sandwich dressing now.

Main Filling- Wafer thin cucumber or watercress sandwiches can be an healthy option. Try using fresh or grilled vegetables in your sandwiches  in order to avoid using red meat. Chicken, turkey or ham may be more acceptable as a sandwich filling. Different varieties of fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel make excellent healthy fillings for sandwiches.
