Risks Associated with Low Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels can be a silent killer. Most of us are aware of this fact and take every care to eliminate harmful cholesterol from our daily diet. You will also find entire portions of supermarkets sporting food products boldly labeled as ‘cholesterol free’ or low cholesterol. However, extremely low levels of cholesterol in our blood can prove to be detrimental for our health as well.

The normal levels of cholesterol  is considered to be  200 mg per deciliter but the lower level cannot be fixed as such. It depends on the constitution of the individual concerned. Let us now take a look at the problems that can be associated with lower levels of cholesterol.

Cancer- LDL is known as bad cholesterol and an increase in LDL levels can prove to be a health risk. However, very low levels of the cholesterol may be responsible for different types of cancer.

Depression- Extremely low levels of cholesterol may  cause a reduction in serotonin levels too. The chemical present in the brain has been directly linked to a feeling of elation and calmness of the mind. Decrease of serotonin can be manifested by bouts of depression in cholesterol deficient individuals.

Premature Deliveries- Pregnant women are normally advised to take care of their weight and avoid high cholesterol food. However, if the levels of cholesterol fall abysmally low, the woman may give birth well before time. Consequently, the weight of the new born baby will be low. A few of these premature births may also result in babies born with congenital heart diseases.

Heart- People who have a low level of HDL or good cholesterol are at a high risk for developing cardiac disease. An average ratio of 5:1 of  good and bad cholesterol is required in order to keep the heart reasonably healthy.
