Relieve your Cough with Home Remedies
July 31, 2009
Almost all of us have suffered from bouts of cough at least once in our lifetime. Although most of us equate a cough with common cold, the nature of a persistent cough may be completely different. Coughing can also occur during swallowing. Coughing is actually a symptom of respiratory diseases as well as heartburns. Racking, persistent and spasmodic coughing causes discomfort as well as irritation. It breaks our concentration and ends up bothering our family and friends as well. Coughing may persist long after the disease is cured and is occasionally the last symptom to be relieved.
Treating the cough as such is difficult. Most of the over the counter cough syrups do soothe the throat to a certain extent but their sedative nature might be habit forming. The concoction often makes us sleepy thereby affecting our work.
However, some old granny’s recipes might just do the trick. Natural herbs and medicinal plants have been used successfully to relieve coughs throughout the ages. Each nation makes use of its own indigenous flora but the medicinal effects of a few common herbs cannot be denied.
Ginger, lemon and honey are all particularly good for soothing the throat and boiling all these ingredients together in water along with a few cloves of garlic may help to alleviate your cough substantially.
A combination of honey and white pepper can provide you with some relief. You can substitute the white pepper with the black variety for expectoration of phlegm.
Drinking hot tea laced with the juice of ginger will help to restrain your cough.
Alcoholic beverages like brandy or vodka will heat up your body and lessen the urge to cough. Both these beverages prove to be particularly helpful when taken in conjunction with honey.
Honey along with sage leaves and elder blossom tea assuages the throat and relieves the cough. You can add almond or clove oil in order to maximize the effect.
Hot lemon tea or raspberry jam in tea will create a snug and comfortable feeling.
Daily intake of lemon juice and honey may prove beneficial too.
