December 15, 2009
Neck pain and stiffness can be caused by poor posture and stress. Pain in the upper back and neck can be caused because of physical or mental stress. The following tips can help prevent stiffness and neck pain of non-traumatic nature.
You must be able to manage stress properly if you wish to be relieved of neck pain. The signals of stress given by your body must be understood by you. After you understand the initial signals of stress you can educate yourself about de-stressing tools and how you can manage your stress in a better way. In this way you can prevent stress from increasing to unbearable levels. One effective tool to reduce stress is by breathing deeply. Positive thinking can also help you eliminate or lower your stress level. You can also take up yoga as a form of physical and mental relaxation. Deep breathing involved in yoga can ensure better physical and mental health.
You must also relax your shoulders which can prevent stiffness and pain in the neck. Many people hold their shoulders in a tense position instead of carrying it off in a relaxed manner. Neck muscles and upper back can be made to work overtime because of this poor posture. This can result in pain and muscle tension. You have to keep your shoulders in a relaxed manner which can be attained through practice. This will help to reduce stiffness and neck pain.
You must also take steps to improve your posture. This can remove load or pressure on your neck muscles. Many people who work in front of the computer also do not stick to the right posture.
Sitting with a slumped posture can create strain on the muscles in the neck region. You have to ensure that your ears are lined over your shoulders and you stand and sit tall so that the work load on the muscles are reduced which can in turn reduce neck pain or stiffness.
To conclude we can safely say that a person can get relief from stiffness and neck pain by relaxing his/her shoulders, managing mental stress and improving the posture. You can visit a chiropractor when your condition doesn’t improve.
