Prenatal Care – Importance of Vitamins and Vaccinations

A healthy pregnancy can be ensured through regular prenatal care. Prenatal care not only involves health care but also include the counseling and educational aspects so that the different aspects of pregnancy can be handled well. A new mother would be guided on all aspects such as importance of physical activity and nutrition, how to handle the child etc.

You can ask your health care provider any questions related to pregnancy, parenthood or birth while you go for prenatal visits. Women can also talk about preconception health to their health care provider. This can help them to avoid unnecessary problems later on.

At least 400 micrograms of folic acid per day is required for women in the child bearing stage according to the U.S. Public Health Service. This can be consumed wither from supplements or preferably through food sources.

Women are also advised to supplement their diet with folic acid supplements at least 3 months before their pregnancy and then continue the same for 3 months of pregnancy. Extra folic acid can be derived through prenatal vitamins. These supplements are rich in folic acid and other vitamins and minerals such as iron and Vitamin A.

Though several foods are available these days that are fortified with folic acid, women who are thinking about pregnancy should think of getting an extra quantum of this vital compound. This cannot be got from food sources alone. Hence supplements have to be taken by pregnant women beforehand for the birth of a healthy child.  It is also essential to give appropriate immunizations for the mother.

Those who are planning a pregnancy should ensure that they are properly vaccinated. In this way they can become immune to diseases, such as German measles or Rubella. Contracting rubella during pregnancy can lead to various health risks in the fetus namely deafness, cataract in the eyes, heart problems and autism to name a few.

Regular physical activity, a healthy diet and optimum weight have to be maintained for a normal or healthy pregnancy. Hence women have to find ways and means of improving their all round health before becoming pregnant. They can consume a healthy diet which can help them to get all the vital nutrients essential for the normal growth of the fetus.
