Pain in the Neck

Neck pain is quite a common problem. For the person who has it; it is extremely painful. You will find that you cannot move your neck and even slight movement causes excruciating pain. This can take up to three days to get cured. If you are suffering from neck pain you need to take special care and get rid of it.Ice packs and heating pads are equally effective in neck pain. They both help to reduce the swelling. So you can apply whatever you are comfortable with. A combination of both is also fine. If you are applying an ointment to ease the pain then do not apply a heating pad over it as your skin will feel very hot. It would be good to take a tablet at the onset of the pain so as to control the swelling and pain to some extent.

Make sure you sit in a comfortable chair. Your back should have good support and you should be sitting upright. Your spine should be well supported. If you are sitting on a desk job or the computer for long hours; make sure to take breaks every few hours and simply do neck rotations. This will remove any stiffness from the neck. Make sure that your computer screen is in correct alignment with your eyes and that you are not bending your neck or craning it when you are working.

Always be careful while lifting heavy objects; especially if it is on a sling and you are planning to carry it on your shoulders. When you sleep never sleep on your stomach as this way there are more chances of injuring your neck. Also sleep on a comfortable mattress as that too can cause you to get a stiff neck. If you do have a stiff neck try sleeping without a pillow or get one that is hard.

While talking on the phone try not holding it between the neck and shoulder. Use your hand instead. This is sure to give you a stiff neck. Remember to also do lots of exercises that are specifically targeted for the neck.
