Menstrual Cramps can be Eased

Menstruating every month is normal for a healthy young adult woman. It is nature’s way of indicating that you can bear a child. However, the 4-5 days of menstruation is uncomfortable to say the least and most women pray that those days would pass quickly. Apart from an occasional twinge, menstruation is mostly painless. Yet there are instances of young women, particularly adolescent girls suffering from intense pain during their menstrual periods. You can help to overcome the pain by taking a few simple measures. This will ensure that your life goes on uninterrupted even when you are menstruating.

OTC Painkillers- Aspirin and Ibuprofen can be bought over the counter and helps to alleviate menstrual cramps to a great extent.

Heat application- Placing a heating pad over the lower abdomen helps to relieve the pain. This is particularly beneficial if you place the pad over the painful area and relax during bedtime.

Exercise- Contrary to the popular belief, moving about helps to lessen menstrual cramps considerably. Aerobic exercises like brisk walking, jogging or cycling helps in releasing certain hormones and lessens the pain.

Hot Bath- A hot bath or shower will help to ease the pain from your abdomen and lower back. It also improves the blood circulation providing relief from painful menstrual cramps.

Diet- Eating a meal replete with calcium, zinc and vitamin B6 helps to relieve cramps as well as bloating of the stomach. It is a good idea to refrain from excessive caffeine and salt or sugar during menstruation. Drinking herbal teas like raspberry leaf tea helps to ease the cramps considerably as well.

Medical Help- It is necessary to consult a doctor if the simple methods of easing the cramps don’t work. Some women use birth control pills to alleviate the pain as well. However, these pills may cause other serious health related problems.
