Medicinal Uses of Turmeric

Haldi or turmeric is a spice which is mainly used in Indian cuisine. It adds yellow color to the dishes and has a distinct flavor. This spice also finds use in various medicinal preparations in traditional systems of medicine such as Siddha, Unani, Ayurveda and others for healing as well as cosmetic preparations.
Turmeric has many medicinal values. It is an antiseptic and a great blood purifier. As it is loaded with hundreds of antioxidants, its regular usage can prevent free radical damage. Turmeric’s effects are also notable in curing ailments such as tumors, jaundice, cancers, alzheimer’s disease etc. It is also known to strengthen the immune system.
Turmeric is a very effective natural remedy to cure intestinal disorders. You just have to take the juice of the raw root or the powder of the dried root and mix it with milk before consuming it to treat or cure intestinal problems. New mothers can consume the same juice soon after delivery. This helps in faster recovery or contraction of ovaries and inner parts. It also helps to increase breast milk secretion and promote general well-being.
Turmeric is also a natural cure to treat anemia. Since it is a rich source of iron, having a teaspoon full of raw turmeric juice mixed with honey can cure problems associated with anemia. You can be relieved of your bronchial asthma and cough by drinking warm milk mixed with a pinch of turmeric. This remedy not only gives you relief from bronchial asthma but can also ward off further attacks. Turmeric powder can be sprinkled on wounds/ulcers for faster healing. Turmeric can also be applied on burns or cuts as it can stops bleeding or heal the wound due to its antiseptic properties. You can make a paste of turmeric powder and coconut oil and apply on to affected parts to be free of skin problems such as itching and rashes.
You can use water mixed with turmeric powder to wash your eyes to prevent burning sensation or tiredness of eyes. To treat sinus related problems you can use jaggery, turmeric and ghee all of which must be fried in equal proportion and stored in a bottle. Taking a pinch of it can help you be free of sinus related problems. Turmeric is also a proven remedy to treat flatulence, diabetes and skin diseases.
