Management of Cancer Related Pain
Carcinoma or cancer as the disease is normally called, is a dreaded terminal disease. However, it is not always the end of your life. You can definitely recover from cancer if diagnosed early enough. Apart from the debilitating effect of the disease, the most feared fact of cancer is the intense pain associated with it.
Pain Killers-Morphine derivates are often prescribed by the doctors in order to dull the excruciating pain. Most people are concerned with the sedative or addictive nature of the drug. However, it has been noted that these drugs are extremely beneficial for cancer patients and the person is rarely addicted to them if they are taken in moderation. If you find that a particular drug is not working for you, inform your doctor. There are many different groups of drugs aimed specifically at pain management during cancer. Your oncologist is the most qualified person to guide you in this regard.
Routine- Most medicines start their action only after regular intake for a period of time. Cancer is no exception either. Sedatives and analgesics must be taken according to the prescription. Omitting to take a pain killer because of the absence of pain at that particular moment may cause adverse effects. It is important to remember that the cancer patient has to survive on drugs for the time being. Self medication or altering of prescribed medicines at will is detrimental to your health.
Relaxation- The emotional trauma caused by cancer is stressful too. It will help you to regain your strength if you try to adopt a positive attitude. Morbid thoughts about impending death will only accentuate your suffering. Do all the things that you find pleasurable. Reading a book, watching funny movies or playing with kids can uplift your spirits considerably. Meditation or self hypnosis methods may often do the trick. Tapping your subconscious actually helps in alleviating the pain to a great extent.
