Life After a Colostomy
Although few people talk about it, a colostomy is not the most uncommon procedure to be undergone. Most often, people are worried unduly about a colostomy because they only associate it with cancerous growth. This is not true, and a colostomy could simply be performed to relieve a benign blockage.
Although you will worry about how you will undergo a colostomy and how to deal with life after the operation, it is a very routine procedure. An opening is normally made in the abdominal wall to help remove all wastes from the body.
After your operation, it will be easier for you to deal with the condition at the hospital, and you will only have to be about on your own once at home. Since your colon has been removed, you might find that you will be passing stools more often and without your full control for the first few days. This will start to settle soon. You may however, have looser motions since the colon absorbs water, and is now absent.
If you have had a colostomy, you do not need to give up all foods, but only those which are likely to trigger any reactions in the body. You must have a balanced diet. It is most important to eat regular meals and chew the food very well.
You can have a bath after a colostomy quite comfortably, as no water will enter the bowel. You should be careful if you want to go swimming and seek the advice of your doctor before you resume it.
You must consult your surgeon, who will be able to tell you if you will have any problems with sexual intercourse after undergoing a colostomy. It is normal for people to have an active sex life even after a colostomy.
You should be able to travel my all modes of transport quite comfortably. However, it is important to carry some additional bags, water, cloth and scissors in your toilet bag when on the move.
The toughest battle that you have to win is with your own attitude. You must have the desire and drive to be normal and resume a normal life, and you will see that you can.
