Lesser Known Facts About Hypothyroidism
More and more people are starting to suffer from thyroid problems every day. While it is not a killer condition in itself, it upsets the routine functioning of the body, and can trigger many other health complications.
Thyroid is a slightly difficult problem to diagnose. There aer no real set symptoms, and it is tricky to point your finger to a nagging ailment and say that you can be suffering from thyroidism, especially for a lay person.
The condition of hypothyroidism is brought upon because the throid gland is performing inadequately. In other words, this gland is relatively underactive. In turn, this makes all the processes in the body slow down considerably.
While suffering from hypothyroidism is not a great threat, it could in the long run lead to problems related to the heart, or even cause dementia if it is not treated. Patients have also been known to suffer from glaucoma.
Apart from the weight gain that most people are keen to notice, there are other symptoms of hypothyroidism. You are bound to feel more tired than the others, and will also feel slow and sluggish. You will start to feel cold while others around you will not.
There are also mood swings experienced frequently, and you will feel highly irritable. There can also be a loss of appetite. In some cases, you may suddenly find that you are losing hair from your eyebrows as well.
If you feel any of these, you must take a blood test to check for your thyroid levels immediately. Even if you do not have any of these symptoms present, it is better to have yourself checked routinely, as it is very common to have a thyroid condition without really experiencing any trouble to your health.
A routine blood test is all that it takes to check for thyroid. This will tell you if the thyroid stimulating hormone, or any other parameter has variations. If there is some deviation found in the blood test, you will be required to take a thyroxine supplement to correct it. Once you are put on the medication, you will have to continue taking it for life.
