Keloids: Causes and Treatment Methods

Keloids are nothing but scars which rises above skin surface quite abruptly. It has a pink or purple color and a smooth top. Keloids tend to enlarge progressively and are irregularly shaped. Also they are different from scars in that they do not subside over time.

Some of the Keloids are raised and look unsightly. They are not only a problem from the cosmetic viewpoint but can also be itchy and painful to touch. It is not clear as to why some people are susceptible to keloids while some are not. Keloid formation may be the result of changes in cellular formation that control growth in human beings.

Keloids can be seen equally in both women and men. However more women are susceptible to this condition owing a greater extent of body and ear lobe piercing prevalent among women. This condition is less prevalent among the children and the elderly. Keloids can develop in all skin types, however people having darker skin are more likely to develop them. In some cases, this condition can also occur owing to genetic reasons.

A person who has had a keloid must not undergo skin surgeries or procedures for cosmetic reasons. They must not opt for body piercing. Prevention is vital as far as keloid formation is concerned because treatments that are prevalent may not be successful in arresting their formation.

Cortisone injections are prescribed to treat keloids and these are safe and not very painful. A once a month injection is given until the maximum benefit is obtained. Injections are considered to be a safe option as they help to flatten keloids. However they can also lead to formation of more blood vessels superficially and make the flattened keloid redder. Patients can also opt for surgery which may be more risky. This is because opening a keloid can trigger the formation of larger or more number of keloids. Some surgeons cut the keloid and simultaneously inject steroids or apply dressings to clear the wound completely. Radiation procedure is also undertaken after excision to cure this problem.
