Is Your Computer Hazardous to Your Health?

Computers have become an important part of everyday life for most of us. But, just as we can abuse our health through alcohol and drugs, we can also injure our health by overusing the computers. Many people who overuse computers are prone to skeletal symptoms or stress injuries. Repetitive stress injuries can occur when some of the muscles are in a tense position for long periods due to poor posture or repetitive motions.

The various symptoms of computer related RSIs occur owing to strain of certain muscles for long periods of time. Although users of computers rarely suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, they may develop other symptoms related to RSI such as soreness or recurring pain in the wrists, upper back, neck and shoulders. Loss of sensation in the hands and fingers and a tingling sensation can also occur. This may impact sleeping pattern. Some people may also experience weakness, fatigue of muscles and poor grip strength in the arms.

Prevention of RSI in the early stages is possible by following some suggestions given below. When you experience fatigue or pain, you must stop using the computer. Take care of your posture. You must not bend your neck or head forward. By keeping your back straight and your feet firmly on the ground you must pursue work before your computer.

It is also important to take regular breaks. You can for instance install software that reminds you to take breaks. You can also install a keyboard platform to keep your wrists straight in such a way that it can be adjusted upwards or downwards. Getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep is also essential to keep in shape. You can also learn progressive muscle relaxation techniques which will help you to keep your shoulder and neck muscles relaxed.

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is another hazard that can result from the over use of computers. Symptoms of this syndrome include aching or tired eyes, difficulty in focusing, double vision, dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, neck and shoulder pain etc.

For reducing eye strain and glare you must make use of proper lighting. You can also close curtains or blinds for lessening glare from external light.
