Importance of Mammograms
Through early detection by mammograms you can know whether you have breast cancer or not. One of the best ways to find out about what is going on in your body is through the use of mammograms. Each and every woman has to undertake mammograms to keep herself healthy and happy.
It is better for a woman to get the mammogram done early on because the risk for breast cancer grows with age. There is a wrong notion among women that if none of her family members have had the problem of breast cancer she will also be unsusceptible. This is not likely to be the case. You can rule out the possibility of getting breast cancer through a mammogram easily. This test will let you know of this condition in the earliest stage itself. The chances for survival are 97% if the cancer cells have not impacted the lymph nodes and it is 78% if the cancer has affected the lymph nodes.
It does not take much time to get a mammogram done. The procedure involves a technologist placing your breasts between two plastic plates in front of an x-ray machine. The plates will compress on coming together. Though this can be painful, in this way you can give a clear image to read. After the process is completed in about 15 minutes, your results will be available so that you can consult with your doctor.
In case a lump is observed in the mammogram result, the doctor will examine the lump along with the surrounding tissues. He may also order an ultrasound test for knowing about the size of the lump. Through a needle biopsy fluid would be derived for further testing. You can also check for any abnormalities yourself by doing a self breast examination at home for early detection. You must know how the breasts look and feel normally. You can regularly do a self-breast exam to know about any unnatural lumps or other occurrences. When you come across something abnormal, make an appointment with your doctor.
