March 5, 2010

Calcium is a vital nutrient which helps in the growth and development of an individual by keeping our bodies healthy. It is absolutely essential for growth of children. It is also needed for the healthy development of bones and teeth. It can help in the functioning of nerves as well as clotting of blood. Though it is found in large quantities in the human body it also gets eliminated from the body on a daily basis. Women also need large quantities of calcium. You can enjoy all round good health by consuming calcium rich foods or supplements regularly.

Calcium can help you stay free of dental problems by ensuring that your teeth remain strong. The movement of nutrients across cell membranes is also possible through the consumption of calcium. Calcium can prevent osteoporosis as it helps in keeping the bones healthy. It can prevent this degenerative disease from damaging the bones and attacking our systems. It can also strengthen the entire skeletal system of the body by helping you to get relief from chronic backaches. It also helps in the metabolism of hormones and enzymes.

Calcium aids in muscle contraction and checking the blood pressure of the body. It thereby helps in the proper functioning of the blood vessels and the heart. Low fat dairy products, yoghurt, cheese and green leafy vegetables are the best sources of calcium for the body. You can also maintain your fitness levels by consuming calcium rich foods. You can also make use of calcium supplements and other calcium enriched products that can be purchased in medical stores.

Several diseases such as osteomalacia and rickets can develop due to calcium deficiency. Bones can bend at the ankle area when a person develops rickets. Problems during pregnancy and abnormal formation of bones can also result from calcium deficiency. Pregnant women have to take calcium rich foods to avoid problems during pregnancy and delivery.

Decrease of bone density can occur when a person crosses 50 years of age which can lead to fractures. So, you must consume a glass of milk a day regularly to keep your teeth and bones strong and healthy.
