How to Maximize the Benefits of a Sunscreen

While the benefits of the sun’s rays are known by one and all, most of us do not realize that too much exposure to the sun might prove to be harmful for our general health as well. Science has conclusively proved the presence of ultraviolet rays which can be held responsible for development of wrinkles as well as skin cancer.

Several skin care products are now available to protect the exposed parts of our body from the bright sunlight with the sunblock or sunscreen creams and lotions being the most important products in this range. Let us now take a look at the proper way of applying this protective screen so essential for our daily use.

Ingredients- The entire ingredients of a sun block cream can be divided into two distinct categories. A group of compounds that physically block the radiation coming directly from the sun and a second group which absorbs the radiation and are available as UVA and UVB absorbers. Zinc oxide was used for blocking out the radiation previously. However, the compound is white in color and the face look disfigured once it is liberally applied over it. The new products contain titanium dioxide which is micronized and helps in providing excellent skin protection.

Selection- A look at the label of the product will help you to get an idea of the product’s capacity. The UVB absorption level can adequately be measured by the SPF amount present in the cream or lotion. The capability for UVA opposing can only be ascertained after you take a look at the ingredients. The most effective sun screens contain a SPF of at least 15 along with compounds like zinc oxide, avobenzon and titanium dioxide.

Method of Application- Most of us fail to understand that the sunscreen is not a beauty product and should  be used properly in order to get the maximum benefit out of it. The initial application should leave a prominent sheen on the face as well as all the exposed parts of the body. The timing of application should also be calculated carefully. It is mandatory to apply it at least 20 to 30 mins before going out into the sun as the cream takes that amount of time to be completely absorbed . It should, preferably, be the last product to be applied as it may also disintegrate by coming in contact with water based foundations and moisturizers.
