How Safe are OTC Drugs?
Almost all common educated people resort to some sort of self medication. Availability of over the counter drugs has been a boon for us. Simple solutions for headaches, fever or common colds are available instantly and is relatively hassle free. None of us even consider visiting a doctor when plagued by these common symptoms indicating no serious medical conditions.
Safety- All OTC drugs are safe to use. However, it is necessary to read the labels carefully and follow the directions of use. If you are on prescription medicines, you need to consult your doctor before buying OTC drugs. Your prescribed medicines together with the OTC drug may cause adverse reactions in your body. Elderly people must try to avoid OTC medications as far as possible. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is advisable to take the medications only after suitable guidance.
Names- Some OTC drugs may be marketed by brand names. It becomes difficult to ask for the medicine if you are confused about the brand names. However, some medications are available according to their generic brands as well. It is always better to compare the labels in order to ensure the composition of the drug. However, the amounts may vary causing confusion yet again. It is a good idea to ask the pharmacist in such circumstances.
NSAID- NSAIDs are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are taken for common aches and pains. Both Aspirin and Ibuprofen fall within this category. Although relatively safe, they must not be taken together with steroidal medicines. Ulcers or other stomach ailments may be aggravated by these drugs. Regular consumption of alcohol may be contraindicated for taking NSAIDs. Elderly people well over 60 are advised against indiscriminate use of these drugs.
Precautions- OTC drugs are normally meant for providing instant relief. They are not meant for long term use. It is advisable to consult a doctor if your condition worsens after taking OTC drugs. You also need to follow the directions of use meticulously. Crushing or chewing of OTC drugs are not beneficial for your health.
