How Does A Vaccine Work
Vaccines are very useful because they help the body to get prepared and fight potentially dangerous or fatal diseases. The vaccines work by giving the body a preview of a toxin, virus or bacterium and allowing it to become prepared to defend itself in advance. Once the vaccine is given the body is prepared to expel that particular pathogen as the immune system is ready to fight it off.
A majority of vaccines are consumed orally or given as shots. Some vaccines can be inhaled as powders or aerosols. Most of the vaccines contain bacteria or viruses that have been killed or are in the weakened form. Some other vaccines contain inactivated toxins. Vaccine pathogens in their modified state do not cause disease and are very safe.
When the dead or killed pathogen is administered into the bloodstream, the B-cells in the body begin its work. These cells are mainly responsible for fighting against disease-causing pathogens. Antibodies are created after the B-cells are stimulated and then the body starts developing immunity to that specific pathogen. By receiving a vaccine a person develops immunity and is mostly protected for life.
In a few cases, vaccines do not provide immunity forever. For instance vaccines such as pertussis and tetanus work only for a limited period of time. Hence booster shots must be administered for maintaining continuous protection. These vaccine doses must be given at particular intervals of time following the initial vaccination.
The flu vaccine has to be given every year. This is because one vaccine can only prevent certain strains of flu and vaccination against different strains may be required when the next flu season starts. Another important fact to note regarding flu vaccines is that they do not offer life time protection. Protection may be far less than adequate even after one year. By maintaining a vaccine schedule and following it perfectly you can safeguard yourself from deadly and contagious diseases easily.
