Heart Ailments and Medication

It is common to take routine treatment after recovering from a heart attack. This is however, decided by the physician. It is not unusual to stop all medication if you have been able to recover perfectly. Normally, some medication is given for between six and twelve months which will help control heart rates, and also to help dilate the arteries.There have been no drugs found to date which can actually help in preventing a heart attack. It is only the risk factors which ca be kept under control.

There must be control kept on problems like blood pressure, diabetes and also cholesterol.

The medicines that you take for blood pressure will keep it stable. Once it has stabilized, it is not advisable to stop taking them. You must only modify or stop medication if it has been suggested by the doctor.

Diabetes must be controlled either by the diet, insulin or some medication. A heart patient is better slightly under treated for diabetes. This does not mean neglect or lack of control. If diabetes is not treated properly in a heart patient, it could lead to many other complications.

When you do suffer a heart attack remember always to be calm and not panic. Take rest no matter where you are. Sit, or lie down if possible. Take a tranquiliser. This has been found to be the most effective treatment till date. If you can find a medicine which will help dilate the arteries, it can help you.

In the first two days of suffering a heart attack you will in all probability be given a laxative so that there is no pressure exerted when you go to the bathroom. This will also keep the stool soft.

It is most important that the doctor only monitor closely and watch for any complications. As important as medicating to control problems is to make sure that no unnecessary medication is given, as it can cause many unwanted complications. You must be more careful about the medicines that you take, and also medicines that you stop taking. If you are to stop taking medicines it is better they are stopped gradually by reducing doses, than by stopping suddenly.
