Health Risks for Gay Men

Being of a different sexual orientation or gay has become acceptable in the society. However, a lot of them belong to the conservative class feel exposed and embarrassed at the prospect of the truth coming out. Hiding of facts can actually have a much more serious consequence than mere  sexual preference.

Failing to disclose it to the doctor can be harmful for your health if you belong to the gay or lesbian community. Same sex relationships come with their own risks of various diseases which may not be a cause for concern if you are heterosexual. Let us see a few of the health risks that plague gay men in particular.

HIV/AIDS- Sexual relation between two men are considered to be the highest risk factor. The cause may lie in the problem of experimenting with multiple partners leading to an easy transference of the dreaded virus. Exchange of fluids occur during most gay experiences as the men do not feel the need to take precaution in the form of condoms.

Alcohol and Drugs- Scientific studies show the increased number of gay men suffering from both alcohol and drug abuse. The company of all men often end up in the intake of a high concentration of alcohol whereas certain drugs are known to be associated with gay men specially. Crystal Meth is one such drug also known as Ice or Meth in colloquial terms.

Depression- A feeling of anxiety as well as guilt are often known to trouble people having same sex inclinations. The stigma of society cannot be ruled out all together and gay men feel the pressure of being accepted by the society at large. Fatigue, irritability as well as frustration wrecks havoc with the sensitive mental frame of most gay men making them sink into deep depression. The low self esteem often makes them turn to alcohol and drugs complicating things further.

Hepatitis- Different forms of Hepatitis may be transferred rapidly in gay men. Both Hepatitis A and B are infectious in nature with some men becoming carriers of the virulent HBV without showing any symptoms of the disease themselves. A number of immunosuppressant drugs may also increase the chances of  getting infected with Hepatitis as well.
