Headache: Types and Treatment

Tension headache is the most common type of headache that occurs among people. This can be caused owing to tightening of muscles in your neck, shoulders, jaw or scalp. Tension headaches are caused owing to depression, stress or anxiety. By missing meals, lack of sleep, use of alcohol or over dose of work you are likely to suffer from tension headaches.

The other types of headaches that are most common include cluster headaches, migraine, sinus headaches etc. By making a few lifestyle changes or learning how to relax better, you can get rid of headaches and the need to take pain killers.

There may be several causes that can induce headaches among people. Sometimes headaches are the underlying cause for some other serious disorder. If you have sudden or severe head aches, you must get medical help. You must also seek medical attention if you have a headache along fever, a stiff neck, loss of consciousness or headache accompanied by eye or ear pain.

Chronic daily headaches are those that occur more than 15 days a month. In such a case, you may experience pain on one or both sides of your head. You may either suffer from a tight pressure or a dull ache around the head. About 5 percent of adults suffer from chronic headaches. You can be free of chronic headaches by treating the underlying cause for that condition. When there are no underlying conditions present, you will be asked to go inĀ  for preventive medication.

Headache can also signal a serious underlying condition. You have to seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden onset of severe headache, fever, seizure, numbness or difficulty speaking etc. If you suffer from head ache immediately following a fall or bump, you must consult the doctor to rule out complications.

You can ignore headaches if their symptoms are not serious. But if headaches impact your normal functioning, work or personal life, you must take action. You will be taught to manage the symptoms and signs of head aches which can help you a great deal.
