Oral hygiene is a tricky issue. Most of us simply avoid gong to the dentist as we are plagued by irrational fears. However, our mouth cavity is very much a part of our body too and has its own unique set of problems. With literally thousand of microbes teeming within our oral cavity, it is, but natural that most of us become prone to infections of the oral cavity.
Regular Check Ups- Annual check ups of the oral cavity will make you aware of the health problems that you are likely to face. Taking proper precautions at the right time will help you to overcome most oral diseases quickly and easily. Medical research findings have revealed that more than 400,000 people fall prey to oral cancer in the United States of America ever year. This happens predominantly due to lack of oral hygiene and proper care.
Hygiene- Habits that affect the mouth cavity adversely should be avoided at all costs. Excessive smoking or chewing of tobacco products is likely to cause oral cancer. Ulcers in the mouth cavity should not be neglected. They may well be the first indication of oral cancer. Swelling below the neck or chin can also mean that something is wrong within the mouth cavity. You should immediately seek medical help if you experience pain while swallowing. A feeling of something being stuck in your throat is another indication of the dreaded disease. As smoking is a predominant cause of cancer, most dentists advise users of tobacco to check their oral cavities much more frequently.
Smoking- Quitting smoking is an ideal way of reducing a number of health related risks. Passive smokers also face considerable risk of oral cancer if they inhale the toxic nicotine fumes day in and day out.
Personal Care- Proper brushing as well as flossing regularly is good for your teeth as well as the general condition of the oral cavity. Rinsing your mouth with listerine helps to kill off the harmful germs lurking within the oral cavity.
