Foods that may help control blood sugar

There are several foods that can help people suffering from high blood sugar to keep it in check. You can consume oatmeal which is an ideal food that can help control blood sugar levels. You should refrain from buying the sweetened kind. Even though oatmeal is a carbohydrate it is a very good kind of carbohydrate according to the American Dietetic Association. This is because it is high in soluble fiber and takes a longer time to digest.Hence it won’t raise your blood sugar as much or as quickly. Over time it helps in controlling blood sugar. It can also help you by making you feel fuller for a longer period of time. Barley is another food that is rich in soluble fiber and helps to control blood glucose level.  Other than oats and barley many other whole grains are also a good food choice for people suffering from diabetes.

You can also choose vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and Green Beans which can help in controlling blood sugar levels. These can be substituted for other starchy items such as peas, potatoes, corn etc. The vegetables such as spinach and beans are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates which make it ideal for use by diabetics. Vegetables are very healthy for use by diabetics according to new evidence. Since people with diabetes are prone to heart ailments it is essential to keep heart healthy foods in mind and consume them accordingly.

As far as snacking is concerned people with high blood sugar can snack on a handful of strawberries as it will not raise blood sugar too much. They are a better option than a candy or cookie. Strawberries are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber and water. Hence it can make diabetics stay full for a longer period of time so that they will start consuming fewer carbohydrates on the whole.

As meats are high in protein content you can choose foods such as skinless chicken breast, fish, lean cuts of meat etc in proper portions which will make ideal choice for diabetic diets. Salmon is another good option because it contains heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Cinnamon also has been found to contain insulin-like effects and can help bring down blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
