Fat Can Benefit Us

Almost all of us are obsessed with lowering our intake of fats nowadays. As a result we try to sustain ourselves  on a diet of soups and salads shunning fats completely out of our daily diet. However, this is not a very practical idea. All the three basic foods like carbohydrates, fat and protein are essential for our health and forgoing any one of them totally will only ruin your health for good. Let us now take a look at the many benefits of fat in our diet.

Goodness of Fats- Fats provide us with energy and are the most concentrated source of calories. It also conserves energy in form of adipose tissues. Vitamins A, D, E and K are soluble in fat and carried to the different organs of the body by the fats as are the antioxidants. The fat also forms a layer around most vital organs thereby protecting them from external injury. Elasticity of the skin is retained due to the presence of fat and the aging process delayed considerably.

Wear and tear of joints is not extreme  as the lubrication by fats help in smooth functioning of the body . Synthesis of  various hormones are also possible due to presence of the fatty tissues of our body. Fat also helps in protecting us against cold as the subcutaneous fat stores acts as an insulation against temperature changes.

Monounsaturated Fat – These kind of fats are also known as MUFA. They are normally considered to be good fats as they do not solidify and adhere to the arterial walls. This fat has a low melting point and remains in a liquid form at room temperature. They are highly beneficial for our health as they do not have a cholesterol increasing effect. Moreover, it lowers the bad cholesterol of our body without affecting the concentration of good cholesterol.

Olive oil as well as oils from soya, mustard and a host of other nuts like walnut, almonds as well as sunflower seeds and flax seeds contain this highly beneficial form of fat. You will also be surprised to know that dark chocolate is a good source of MUFA as well.
