Masturbation may be prescribed by a sex therapist when sexual dysfunction is present in an adult. This may allow the woman to experience an orgasm or to delay its arrival among men.
Though masturbation was perceived as a sign of mental problem or perversion in the past, it is considered quite normal nowadays. It is also considered to be a healthy sexual activity that is acceptable, pleasant, safe and fulfilling. It can continue throughout life and is a good way to have sexual pleasure. It can become a problem only when it impeded with sexual activity with a partner, causes distress in a person or when it is done in public. It can lead to distress when done under compulsion or when it is seen to interfere with daily life and activities.
