Facts about Atkins Diet

Most of us are concerned with losing our weight in order to look attractive. The world of today is a typically technologically oriented one with no scope for intense physical activity in the course of our daily work.

As a result, the calories that we intake accumulate  in our body as fat and makes us look ungainly apart from affecting our health. However, we need to note the tendency of our own body to respond to a particular diet before we try to incorporate it as a part of our lives.

What is Atkins Diet?

The Atkins diet is one such nutritional approach which is low in carbohydrates and encourages excessive intake of proteins. The creator of Atkins Diet, Dr. Robert Atkins had infact, put forth a powerful argument in support of his theory. According to him, our body actually burns much more calories when deprived of starchy carbohydrates causing little or no fat accumulation within our body.

He also points out that the unused calories were expelled out of the body in the long run thereby preventing  weight gain in human beings. However, other dieticians and nutritionalists argue that there are no obvious signs of speedier metabolism detected in persons folowing the Atkins Diet.

Weight gain is restricted to an extent because people do not care to eat as the diet is overtly boring and takes longer to digest thus killing the appetite. One particular benefit of this diet is that it is easier to follow  as it does not promote hunger unlike the other fat deprivated diets.

Risks- Although the Atkins Diet proves to be beneficial as far as losing weight is concerned it is associated with a number of health risks as well. The no fiber and high protein diet can increase the possibility of  contracting various cardio vascular diseases, osteoporosis as well as disturbed bowel movements leading to medical conditions of the digestive system as well.

Halitosis or bad breath is another unpleasant problem suffered by persons on an Atkins diet. The ketone bodies produced during ketosis which occurs as a result of eating only proteins is known to produce a rank smelling, foul breath.
