Fabulous Fiber

March 2, 2010

Fiber is an important part of over all health but is not an actual nutrient. The best source for soluble fiber is fruits and vegetables. Soluble and insoluble fibers are the two types of fibers.

Soluble fiber is that type of fiber which is found in beans, peas, legumes, oats and certain fruit types. It is used to lower glucose levels and blood cholesterol. Insoluble fiber is that which helps in the movement of foods through the digestive system. This fiber can be found in foods such as wheat bran. Vegetables, nuts and whole-wheat flour are other good sources of insoluble fiber. People who wish to lose weight can include large quantities of fruits and vegetables because these are rich in minerals and vitamins and low in calories also. People wishing to shed weight can also eat brown rice, whole-grain bread or whole-wheat pasta. This can provide you with fiber and can also help in suppressing your hunger for a longer period of time.

Dietary fiber has other advantages also. It can help you maintain the blood sugar level. Soluble fiber has many other advantages in that it can slow the absorption of sugar and improve blood sugar levels in diabetics. You can also reduce your chances of contracting type 2 diabetes by eating a high fiber diet. The food has to be chewed thoroughly when you eat a high fiber diet which thereby helps in slowing down the eating process. You can feel fuller soon which can help in the prevention of problems such as obesity and over eating. Soluble fiber can also influence triglycerides, cholesterol positively and other blood particles which can lead to development of heart ailments.

Fiber rich foods not only help to control your appetite but can also absorb water as the food moves into the stomach. These foods stay for a longer time in the stomach and are difficult to digest. This can prevent your temptation to snack frequently in between meals. Insoluble fiber is vital for the smooth working condition of the digestive system. This is made possible because the softness and bulk of stools is increased naturally which can also bring you relief from problems such as constipation and other acute conditions.
