Different Types of Massage
There are a variety of massages that are being offered in health clinics and spas today. The following are the notable and more exotic types of massage.
The traditional Indian system of health care, ayurveda is catching up in the west like never before. Massage is only a portion of ayurvedic system of medicine. Ayurvedic massages are offered increasingly in spas all over the world. People are segregated under the vatha, pitha and kapha categories under ayurvedic treatment. Based on his/her type, treatment is offered. The ayurvedic massage involves the use of large quantities of oil.
A traditional Chinese form of massage, Tui Na is based on the idea of Oi and Chinese medication. Qi (or Chi), is nothing but a life force or energy passing through the body along lines called meridians. The Oi is made to flow smoothly using various manipulations and techniques in this method of massage. Along with acupressure, soft tissue massage techniques are also used. Even poultices and herbal compresses occupy a place in this type of treatment. This massage works well for treating musculoskeletal problems but cannot offer complete relaxation to the body.
Shiatsu originating in Japan is a type of massage using “finger pressure”. In this type of massage, manipulations and hand pressure are used to relieve tension in joints and muscles. Customers are completely clothed until the massage is completed. This type of massage is recommended for neck and back pain for increasing mobility. The various styles of shiatsu are based on the principles in traditional Chinese medicine.
The traditional Thai Massage originated in Thailand about 2500 years ago. It uses energy line work, acupressure and stretching. This form of massage is still prevalent in many hospitals, and clinics of Thailand. Thai Yoga Massage is slightly more westernized these days and this new version of massage was devised by a German man called Harald Brust.
Aromatherapy massage involves essential oils with techniques that can lead to complete relaxation of the body. Essential oils are concentrated extracts derived from leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits or roots. This type of massage is used to relieve symptoms related to anxiety, stress or muscular pains and aches.
