Diet for kidney stones

Kidney stones develop in the kidney region and are formed when the minerals are not eliminated through urine. Pain during urination, nausea and pain in the groin and abdomen region are some of the symptoms associated with this condition.

Some changes have to be made in the dietary habits by people suffering from kidney stones so that they can effectively deal with this problem.

You must drink lots of water if you happen to suffer from the problem of kidney stones. In this way the body can be better equipped to eliminate uric acid and minerals via urine. By drinking more water your urine can become diluted and this can reduce the chance of developing kidney stones.

Another mineral essential for the healthy functioning of the body is calcium. Kidney stones can develop owing to unabsorbed or excessive calcium in the body. Hence you must try to maintain the correct amount of calcium level in the body. This can be done by eating foods that are rich in calcium which can be absorbed by the body easily. Some minerals can affect the absorption of calcium in the body and make a person prone to develop kidney stones easily. Oxalic acid or Oxalate impacts the calcium absorption in the body. Hence it is better to minimize the intake of oxalate-rich foods.

You must not eat foods that are high in salt content. This can help in preventing problems such as high blood pressure and also the problem of kidney stones. You must also refrain from eating foods that have high purine content in them. People suffering from the problem of kidney stones are also advised to consume a low protein diet to get relief. You must also stay away from foods that can irritate the kidneys such as alcoholic beverages, pickles, condiments, onions, beans, asparagus, meat, gravies and carbonated drinks. A well balanced protein diet is advocated in patients suffering from kidney stones. They can also drink diluted fruit juices such as carrot juice every two hours for at least 3 days. For breakfast they can take milk sweetened with honey and fresh fruits.
