Diabetic Nerve Pain: 10 Foot Care Tips to Protect Yourself

June 10, 2009

Diabetes is one such ailment that can make you prone to foot problems as it can damage your nerves and blood vessels and also reduce the amount of blood flow to the feet which can make it difficult for the wounds to heal. This in turn can make you less susceptible in judging any injury on your foot unless there is some severe infection. Here are some tips to take care of your foot.

1.) Wash your feet properly everyday with lukewarm water. Make sure you do not wash them with hot water as it can take longer time to heal if the sores are waterlogged.

2.) Use mild soap. Strong soaps may damage the skin so one should use delicate soaps for the feet.

3.) Check both the feet every day. You must check your feet everyday for any cuts or injuries. Make sure you not only look at them once but go through them properly, scanning between your toes, heels, soles and sides.

4.) Avoid walking barefoot. Do not walk barefoot as walking without shoes makes you prone to injuries. Always wear your slippers or shoes.

5.) Must wear socks with shoes. Shoes are either made of leather or plastic which can irritate the skin and also lead to blisters. In fact thicker socks are always a good option to protect your feet.

6.) Make sure your shoes are of your size. Ill fitting shoes hurt the feet and it becomes easy to get blisters. Also you must check your shoes properly of any sharp edges in them before buying.

7.) Avoid antiseptic solutions on your feet. Antiseptics can cause burns and injuries on the skin so they should be avoided.

8.) Always dry your feet. Make sure after washing your feet every time that you dry them properly before getting into your socks as wet feet get infected easily.

9.) Exercise. Exercises like yoga, swimming and cycling are believed to be less impact exercises for the foot which can be performed easily. You must speak to your doctor about them.

10.) Talk to your doctor. Even if you notice any slight infection or blisters or sores, you must report to your doctor about them.

Your feet are very important part of your existence. You must take care of your feet properly and talk to your doctor if you have any problems.
