Dentures Cause Speech Problems
Our teeth fall off as we age. Loss of teeth due to accidents may also make us feel vulnerable. Dentures can help us to overcome the problems that we face without our teeth as well as regain our lost confidence. However, as with most things, dentures also need a minimum period of getting used to. Apart from chewing and swallowing problems, there may be a few speech problems associated with dentures as well.
Lisps- Dentures are not organic in origin and hence are treated as a foreign object by our body. Excess saliva is generated as the dentures occupy your mouth cavity causing you to mumble during conversation. Occasionally you may find yourself lisping as your artificial teeth tries hard to pronounce certain words.
Gurgling- The saliva will make the dentures slip out from your gums quite frequently. The excessive lubrication may result in a peculiar gurgling sound or unintelligible speech.
Whistling- Your new set of dentures may well alter the position of your front teeth. Your tongue will often falter while trying to find the new position causing a whistle like sound to escape from your lips. This will sound as if you are whistling even if you are in no mood to do so.
Full Sensation- Talking with your new dentures on will feel like you are speaking while eating. However, the sensation will begin to lessen as you start getting used to your dentures.
Precautions- It is a well known fact that you will need a fair bit of practice to get used to your dentures. Speaking aloud and trying to pronounce the words with which you have difficulty is a good way to overcome your speech problems.
Slipping out of the dentures can be prevented by using denture adhesive in order to keep them firmly in place.
Chewing on hard candy or lozenges may help in clearing up the excess of saliva from your oral cavity.
