Contraception with Spermicides

Contraception is a major problem for most people. One needs to experiment with various contraceptive methods before one can identify the suitable product. Spermicides are also a type of contraceptive used to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Spermicides are usually used in conjunction with other contraceptive aids. Using only spermicides as a means of avoiding pregnancy is not always 100% effective. Physically the spermicides are clear, unscented and non staining lubricants.

Types- Spermicidies are available in many different forms like gels, foams and thin films. Menfegol is a tablet form of spermicide and is marketed in Europe. Benzalkonium chloride and sodium cholate are spermicides used in contraceptive sponges. Certain commonly available ingredients can also serve as effective spermicides. Lemon juice solutions have been known to arrest the movement of sperms. A few lactic acid preparations are available commercially as spermicides.

Success- Using a spermicide with other physical objects like condom, diaphragms, cervical caps  and sponges increases the chances of preventing pregnancy to a great extent. However, condoms contain very little amount of spermicides and have a short shelf life. These condoms have also known to cause urinary tract infections in women.

Usage- Spermicides are usually inserted physically into the vagina with the aid of an applicator or by placing the product directly in front of the cervix. Spermicides usually start functioning within 15 minutes of application and the action lasts for an hour approximately.

Side Effects- There are a few side effects associated with spermicides. Irritation or itching of the skin or sex organs may be found in either or both the partners using spermicides. Urinary tract infections, yeast infections as well as bacterial vaginosis  in women are some of the  more serious side effects. There have been some concerns raised over the issue of birth defects in children who had been conceived despite using spermicides.
