Colic pains and what parents can do about it
Colic is a condition that can make a baby to cry endlessly. It is a painful condition which is characterized by bouts of crying seen in new born babies. The babies can cry continuously even for a long period of time which makes it hard on the baby and the parents. There is no clear cause or cure for this condition.A baby experiencing colic pain can clench her fist and draw up her legs and scream in pain. The child can also continue crying even after he/she is soothed by the mother. The baby can also put fists into the mouth and try to get relief through sucking.
Extreme stomach pain or colic can occur when spasms in the gut lock in air bubbles. A baby swallows air when they take milk. This is brought out when the baby burps following a feed. In the case of some babies the gas bubbles moves into bowel and cause extreme pain after being trapped there. This results in colic pain. Colic pain during the evening can be the result of gas accumulation which builds up slowly throughout the day.
Colic can also be caused from allergy to dairy products including cow’s milk. In the case of babies that don’t breast feed, colic can be the result of milk formulas. You can do a lot of things to ease the pain associated with colic.
After every feed you can make the baby bring a burp by rubbing her back gently and patting gently on the bottom of the baby. You can also make the baby to sit on your knee and make her bring up gas by holding her head in a higher position. After a feed you can keep the baby in a laid position and then lift her again. This can be very helpful in bringing up a burp.
You can also make the baby to lie on her tummy to help her find relief. You can use warm water bottles around the tummy area to relieve spasm. You must try to distract the baby with the help of a toy or rocking her so that she forgets about the pain. The gas bubbles that get formed in the stomach can also broken through the use of gripe water.
