Choose the Right Toothpaste
Brushing our teeth is an essential part of our personal hygiene. Dentists recommend brushing our teeth at least twice a day in order to prevent gum diseases, cavities and plaques. Appropriate toothpaste coupled with a proper brushing technique can make your teeth healthy and keep you smiling. With so many toothpastes flooding the market, how do you choose the one best suited for you? Let’s find out what the toothpastes can do for you…
Fluoride- Toothpastes containing fluorides are recommended by almost all dentists. The fluoride helps to fight the bacteria and prevents any potential bacterial attack on your teeth. The American Dental association also endorses the use of toothpastes containing fluoride. However, it is necessary to rinse your mouth properly after brushing with such toothpastes as large amounts of fluoride may be poisonous for you. Too much of the element in your toothpaste may also give your teeth a streaky appearance. Remember to use fluoride in moderation while brushing. Don’t go overboard with it.
Plaque Protection- You can buy special toothpastes aimed at protecting your teeth from plaque formation. These toothpastes also help to control tartar and usually contain pyrophosphates and zinc citrate. They help to protect the teeth against bacterial infection as well. Some of these toothpastes may contain Triclosan which kills off the bacteria effectively.
Whitening Toothpastes- Some toothpastes aim at whitening our teeth by getting rid of stains and discoloration. Most of these toothpastes contain certain abrasive chemicals like baking soda. However, they do not contain any bleaching agents and are safer to use than other non-standard teeth polishing agents.
Sensitive Teeth- A lot of people have sensitive teeth. They cannot eat very hot or cold foods and have teeth which are painful to touch. Toothpastes containing potassium nitrate and strontium chloride are often used for desensitizing the teeth. The chemicals control the pain by blocking the exposed nerve endings. Effects are not seen overnight and people with sensitive teeth need to use the specially formulated toothpastes for at least a week before the result becomes obvious.
