Causes of Temporary Urine Incontinence
July 29, 2009
Years of conditioning have made us capable of checking the urge for urination. Infants and babies pass urine involuntarily but adults can control it voluntarily. However, involuntary excretion of urine is not a disease at all but can often be a symptom or indication for the underlying problem. Statistics show that more women are prone to it, especially older women although it is not a part of the aging process.
Let us now have a look at the conditions that can lead to temporary urinary incontinence.
Brain development- Bed wetting is a common problem among children. This may happen due to slow or abnormal development of the brain. Urinary infection may be one of the underlying causes too. Day time incontinence is relatively rare in children. This condition usually resolves itself as the child grows older.
Drugs- Anti depressants, drugs for hypertension as well as cardiac medication can give rise to urinary incontinence. Addiction to sleeping pills may also be a cause for the problem.
Constipation- Chronic constipation may result in over activity of the nerves serving both the rectum and bladder leading to leakage of urine.
Water intake- Drinking lots of water within a short time may lead to excessive formation of urine and cause leakage.
Caffeine- All beverages containing caffeine are diuretic in nature. They stimulate increased formation of urine causing incontinence. Caffeine also affects the bladder muscles of the body.
Alcohol- Consumption of alcohol is one of the commonest causes of urine incontinence. Alcohol is also a diuretic and stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine.
Smoking- Smoking is injurious to health in more ways than one. The nicotine stimulates over activity of the bladder causing incontinence.
Infections- Urinary Tract Infections are one of the primary reasons for urine incontinence. The problem cures itself as the infection subsides.
Concentration of urine- This happens when there is a reduced intake of fluids. Consequently the urine gets concentrated and causes irritation of the bladder leading to incontinence. The problem worsens as the concentrated urine reduces the bladder capacity as well.
