Causes of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Venous thromboembolic (VTE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein in the pelvic or leg region. This can happen because of stoppage in blood flow or owing to damage of the veins. The clot formation can become dangerous when it occurs above the knee. If such a thing happens then a portion of the clot may break and go up to the vein and thereby obstruct the blood vessel in the lung. This event is called pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), and it can be fatal.

What causes deep vein thrombosis?

People with a prior history of this disease can be affected by this condition. Hypertension, vascular damage and susceptibility for blood clotting can also lead to this disease. A major risk factor for this disease is obesity which can in turn lead to pulmonary embolism. Immobility, age factor, illness are some of the other factors that can cause this disease.

The close association between obesity and hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases indicate that severe clinical morbid obesity can be one of the main risk factors for vascular problems such as venous thromboembolic disease or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Ultrasound was performed on at least 4439 patients to confirm the positive relation between obesity and deep vein thrombosis. Hence the most common reason for the condition are weight gain or obesity. These patients had enrolled their names in the DVT-Free Registry.

Apart from the risk of this disease, you can find plenty of other reasons too to get in shape and maintain an ideal weight. Obesity is associated with other life threatening disease such as gall stones, diabetes, pregnancy problems, sleep apnea and several other diseases. A sedentary lifestyle can also cause this condition among people. By maintaining an active lifestyle and indulging in regular exercise, the number of people affected by this condition can drastically go down.
