Care and Cure for Dry Eyes
We often hear of ‘dry eyes’. Yet very few of us actually understand the meaning of the term. The condition occurs due to reduced tear formation. Dry eyes are characterized by a sensation of something grainy or gritty within the eye. It is often accompanied by a itching and burning sensation. Excessive dryness may sometimes lead to enhanced production of water like component of our eyes.
Causes- Staring for long hours at the computer screen, pollution as well as advanced age are all contributing factors of the disease. Constant exposure to the cool, dry air in your office, poor lighting and staying out in the sunlight can cause dry eyes as well.
The oil producing capabilities of our body is reduced with age. This may effect our eyes too. Tears do contain a oily component, without which, the water evaporates rapidly leaving our cornea dry. Dry eyes may also be a symptom of some serious medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s Syndrome. Women approaching their menopause often develop this condition.
Working for long hours on the computer takes its toll on our health. Rapid blinking helps in lubricating our eye to a certain degree. Concentrating on the computer screen may prevent us from blinking often. This is a common cause for dry eyes.
Diet- Supplementing your diet with vitamin A will help to prevent dry eyes. Adding carrots rich in Beta-carotene will allow you to reduce the risk considerably. Omega 3 fatty acids in your daily diet can actually help you to reverse the condition.
Remedy- You can replenish your tears by ‘artificial tears’ which you can buy over the counter. These eye drops will help to soothe your eyes and will prevent your eyes from drying out completely. Washing the eyes regularly with rose water may also help the condition. It is a good idea to cover your eyes with sunglasses when you cannot prevent exposure to sunlight.
