Cardiac Arrests and Your Sex Life
When you engage in sex, a combination of both physical exertion and mental relaxation are experienced. The entire act of sexual intercourse can be divided into three phases. The first is foreplay. There is little or no physical exercise involved here. The only experience is mental in nature, and is most unlikely to strain the heart. The last phase also, similarly, only brings about complete mental and physical relaxation. It is the middle phase, which is the experience of the orgasm, which is accompanied by some physical exertion. This can increase the heart rate and also the blood pressure. It is possible for about ninety percent of heart patients to be able to experience a normal sex life without causing any discomfort to the cardiovascular system. In fact, suppressing the sexual urge can lead to stress and mental tension, which is more lethal than the sex itself.
Patients recover completely after about two or three months of having a heart attack. They can now resume their normal sex lives. You should, however, listen carefully to the body and work to it’s limitation. You will know how far you can then go.
Never force yourself. It is possible for people who have irregular or enlarged hearts to experience pain in the chest, discomfort, breathlessness, or palpitation during intercourse. These people should go very slowly, and make sure that they modify in a way that they remain a more passive partner in the intercourse. This is not very difficult to achieve. All it takes is a little understanding and acceptance.
It may be a little embarrassing , or even hurt the ego to actually come to terms with the fact that you will be more passive and less actively involved. You must remember, however, that sex is more in the mind than in the body. You will be able to find many ways and positions that can help you and your partner be satisfied. In fact, if you view this in the right perspective, this is actually giving both of you the chance to experiment much more. The act of sex is more about being intimate. Enjoy it for what it is.
