Boost Your Memory during Old Age

Loss of memory can affect people as they age. Memory loss as a result of aging can impact companions, family members, spouses and others. It can evolve gradually and later become serious enough to warrant medical treatment or attention.

Aging can initially affect short-term memory. This is especially the case when a person suffers from a condition such as Alzheimer’s when symptoms of memory loss can occur. Exercise can have positive effects on brain functioning. It can also improve your cardiovascular health by lowering the risk towards diabetes, obesity etc which are the known risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease.

You must also try to see and do things differently. For instance you can walk your way home taking another route. You can also develop new ideas by reading a new book or by downloading it. You can also take a short nap during day time which can help the brain as far as long term memory function is concerned.

As you age you must also eat less of dairy, meat and fatty products. You can choose the Mediterranean diet containing plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, sea food and olive oil which is shown to lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive impairment.

You can join a brain gym or indulge in brain games such as sudoku or cross word puzzles which can improve memory and attention. You can also try to be net savvy and spend some of your time online as this can improve brain functioning and decisions with regard to decision making.

Black and green teas can also influence the enzymes in the brain and positively affect memory. You can also de-stress yourself by having moderate amounts of coffee or tea everyday which can lower your chances of developing dementia later in life.

If you happen to suffer from depression it is better to have it treated as it can affect memory later on. Anti-depressant medication and talk therapy can help in solving the problem. Those having a family history of depression and caregivers of older people can also develop this condition so they must take care to see the doctor even if they see the slightest symptoms.
